Carabao Cup: Chelsea down Derby County 3-2 on Frank Lampard’s return to Stamford Bridge
Frank Lampard’s return to Stamford Bridge didn’t end in the way he planned after his side Derby County were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by the Premier League giants.
Lampard’s Derby County had earlier defeated Manchester United in the competition.
Yet, the match wasn’t without its drama as they scored four of the five goals in the match and yet ended up losing 3-2 at the end of it all. Own goals from Tomori and Keogh were cancelled out by Jack Marriot and Martyn Waghorn before Cesc Fabregas scored just before half-time to help Chelsea gain a 3-2 lead–a goal that turned out to be the winner at the end.
But the Rams threatened to make a fightback when substitute David Nugent hit the post in the dying stages of the match but all danger was averted for Chelsea by Willy Caballero. Lampard’s side had their own chances in the second half to equalise and even take the lead with Mount, Marriot and Keogh looking to score but failed to do so. Even Chelsea defender Gary Cahill came close to scoring from close range but was denied. Alvaro Morata’s header too was safely pouched by Scott Carson as the home side ended as the victors after the final whistle was blown.
