Calcutta High Court on Thursday allowed the proposed Rath Yatras of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal.
Notably, the BJP, which sits in opposition in West Bengal, has filed a petition challenging the state government’s decision to deny permission for the rallies. The matter has become a tussle between the Mamata Banerjee government and the saffron party.
Also, the issue has taken a central stage in BJP’s attack against the government with the saffron party continuing its protest against the TMC government for denying the permission of holding ‘Yatras’ in the state.
A single judge bench had earlier agreed with the state government decision to refuse permission to Amit Shah’s ‘rath yatra’ on grounds of possible “communal tension”. However, a division bench that was hearing the BJP’s appeal has asked the administration to ensure that there is no breach of law and order.
BJP president Shah is scheduled to kickstart the party’s ‘Save Democracy Rally’, comprising three ‘rath yatras’, in the state. The campaign is scheduled to begin from Cooch Behar district in the north on December 7, from Kakdwip in the South 24 Parganas district on December 9, and from the Tarapith temple in Birbhum district on December 14.
