Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, hero of 1971 India-Pakistan war, dies

Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, the hero of 1971 India-Pakistan war, breathed his last today, at the age of 78.  He was suffering from Cancer, passed away at the Fortis Hospital in Mohali, Punjab.

In the 1971 war, he was commanding a small group of just over a 100 soldiers and successfully defended the Longewala border post in Rajasthan against around 2000 Pakistani soldiers.

Kuldip Singh Chandpuri was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) for the heroic stand-off against the tanks and forcing the enemy to retreat.

The feat of Chandpuri and his men was later featured in the Bollywood blockbuster movie Border which was released in 1997. The character of Chandpuri was essayed by Sunny Deol.

Chandpuri retired as a brigadier from the Indian Army. He is survived by his wife and three sons.
