This is a real life tale straight out of a Bollywood film. A 24-year-old “brain-dead” man was taken for autopsy in a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh on Monday but was found to be alive.
The man whose name is Himanshu Bhardwaj was critically injured in a road accident in Chhindwara city on Sunday. He was taken to a hospital in Nagpur but was declared brain dead on arrival. His body was sent back to Chhindwara.
Sources said, “Bhardwaj’s family members then brought him back to the Chhindwara district hospital where doctors on being declared dead was shifted to the mortuary. However as his body was being prepared for postmortem, Dr. Nirnay Pandey, the pathologist, detected Bhardwaj’s pulse and sent his body to a ward in the hospital, where Bhardwaj responded to treatment.”
“At times, in brain-dead patients, the heart and the respiratory system stop functioning transiently, which seems to be the case here. Himanshu is still brain-dead. Thus, he has been referred to Nagpur due to lack of sufficient facilities locally,” CNN-News 18 quoted a doctor as saying.
AS it is a severe case of negligence, Himanshu Bharadwaj’s relatives are demanding stern action against the doctors concerned.
