Gulshan Kumar case: Bombay HC upholds acquittal of Ramesh Taurani

Gulshan Kumar who was the founder of the T-Series music label and a Bollywood movie producer. In 1997, he was murdered by the Mumbai underworld syndicate D-Company. He was shot outside the Jeeteshwar Mahadev Mandir, a Hindu mandir dedicated to Lord Shiva of which he attended daily in Jeet Nagar, Andheri West suburb of Mumbai. As per reports, Kumar was shot 16 times.

On Thursday, the Bombay High Court pronounced the verdict in Kumar’s murder case.

At the time, a few people were arrested and Rauf Merchant, an aide of gangster Dawood Ibrahim, was sentenced to a life term imprisonment in 2002 for the murder of Gulshan. Producer and owner of Tips, Ramesh Taurani was arrested in October 1997 for abetting the crime. On April 29, 2002, a sessions court acquitted 18 of the 19 accused.

A division bench of Justice S S Jadhav and Justice N R Borkar stated that he deserved no ‘leniency’ as he “absconded right after his arrest. He was released in 2009. Further, the bench also dismissed an appeal filed against the acquittal of producer Ramesh Taurani. Bombay High also sentenced accused Abdul Rauf Merchant to life imprisonment, on Thursday the bench said via Indian Express.

News agency ANI tweeted as: “Conviction of Rauf Merchant is upheld by Bombay High Court in Gulshan Kumar murder case. Ramesh Taurani’s acquittal upheld, Maharashtra govt’s appeal against Taurani dismissed.”

In another tweet, ANI wrote: “Another accused Abdul Rashid who was acquitted earlier by sessions court has been convicted by Bombay High Court now following Maharashtra govt’s appeals against his acquittal. Abdul Rashid Dawood Merchant has been given life term after conviction by HC.”
