The Bombay High Court on Sunday sent former Maharashtra minister Anil Deshmukh to Enforcement Directorate’s custody till November 12. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader was arrested in a money laundering case on November 1. The Bombay high court set aside a special court order remanding the former Maharashtra home minister in judicial custody. He was sent to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate till November 12.
A bench of Justice Madhav Jamdar was hearing an application filed by the Enforcement Directorate. They were challenging a special court order. The Mumbai court had on Saturday remanded Deshmukh to 14-day judicial custody. The ED challenged the order and made an urgent plea for an extension of Deshmukh’s custody for nine days. But it was rejected by the Bombay High Court. Justice Madhav Jamdar of the HC directed Deshmukh’s remand with ED from November 7 to November 12 only.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader was arrested in a money laundering case on November 1. This was after 12 hours of questioning by the ED. The agency is probing a ₹100 crore extortion case against Deshmukh. It is based on an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He was arrested based on allegations levelled against him by the former Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh. Singh has said Deshmukh was asking Sachin Waze, to collect ₹100 crores from bars and restaurants in the city every month.
Deshmukh has denied all the allegations against him. But had to resign in April after the CBI registered the case. Whereas Param Bir Singh has become untraceable.
