An explosion has occurred near Kabul’s international airport shortly after Afghan Vice President Rashid Dostum returned to the country after more than a year in exile, police has said. So far officials have confirmed 11 dead, 14 wounded.

Al Jazeera reports that Dostum was unharmed in Sunday’s blast, his spokesman said Bashir Adhmad Tayanj said.

Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai told Reuters news agency the blast happened near an airport entrance where supporters had been waiting to greet Dostum. Interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish said “The blast was probably caused by a suicide bomber”. Dostum was exiled from Kabul and he moved to Turkey in May last year amid allegations of sexual abuse and torture.
