Comic legend Bill Cosby sentenced up to 10 yrs in prison for sexual assault
US television icon and comedian Bill Cosby was given three years of prison sentence, for sexually assaulting a woman at his Philadelphia mansion 14 years ago.
Since the fall of Harvey Weinstein ushered in the #MeToo movement, he is the first celebrity convicted and sentenced for a sex crime.
Cosby was found guilty on April 26 of drugging and molesting Andrea Constand who was a former university basketball administrator. After the judge rejected a defence request to release Cosby on bail, the entertainer led out of court in his shirt and braces, his tie and jacket removed.
His sentence means that Cosby can apply for parole after three years. His requests will be reviewed by a special committee and if rejected, he might serve up to a maximum sentence of 10 years behind bars. Cosby declined to testify in court or produce any witnesses to emphasise past years of philanthropic work as mitigating circumstances in his favour.
Cosby, even after being convicted, expressed no public remorse. His wife, Camille, did not attend the sentencing hearing, nor were his children anywhere to be seen. During the sentencing, he sat motionless in a courtroom packed with about 200 people.
