Khaleda Zia — former prime minister of Bangladesh was sentenced to another seven years in jail by a Bangladesh Court in corruption cases.
The latest sentence is related to the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. According to the case, she and three others misused their power and reportedly raised funds from unknown sources.
Zia is already serving a jail term since February after being convicted in another case related to embezzlement of funds of an orphanage named after her husband President Zia-ur-Rahman.
According to the report, the concerned Dhaka court found Khaleda Zia guilty of misuse of power as prime minister in collecting $375,000 for the Zia Charitable Trust Fund from unknown sources.
Besides Zia, the judge also sentenced three others to seven years in jail each for collecting the money from undeclared sources.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief and three others, including Harris Chowdhury, her secretary, were sentenced in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
Those sentenced were also fined 1 million taka each, and they will have to serve six months more in jail if they default in this as well, according to the verdict. This is the highest punishment under the existing law, The Daily Star report said.
