LGBTQ representation in Indian movies has been quite rare. While films like Aligarh, Bombay Talkies, My Brother Nikhil and Margharita with a Straw have seemed like a step forward in terms of telling LGBTQ stories. However, others like Dostana, Fashion and Kya Kool Hai Hum have taken things back by ages. Now, with the arrival of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Made in Heaven and Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan it looks like the Indian entertainment industry is finally getting things right.
Two months after the release of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, the makers announced of coming up with another semi-sequel part- Shubh Manga Zyada Saavdhaan. While the original was about a straight couple dealing with the issue of erectile dysfunction, the new movie will be about a gay couple addressing another bodily issue.
Hindustan Times has reported that “The idea is to bring out into the open bodily issues that no one discussed. Which is not to say that Shubh Mangal Saavdhan 2 will go down the same path as the first installment with Ayushmann again. But there will definitely be a flaw in the protagonist to deal with.”
The fact that Ayushmann Khurrana and Aanand L. Rai are associated with a gay love story is more than a reason to get excited for Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. But now there’s another reason to get excited and that is Rajkummar Rao. Rajkummar Rao is reportedly the actor who will be seen opposite Ayushmann Khurana in the movie.
Previously, both these actors were seen sharing a stage in Bareilly ki Barfi. It’ll be interesting to watch both of them together on screen for the second time. Both Ayushmann and Rajkummar are extremely naturalistic actors and are capable of portraying the nuances of the human psyche comfortably. And with a comparatively complex topic such as homosexual romance, we are relying on them to portray such sensitive topics with ease.
