Former prime minister and Bharat Ratna Awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee was laid to rest with full military honours at 5 pm in Smriti Sthal in the national capital on Friday. Vajpayee passed away at 5.05 pm in AIIMS on Thursday, due to multiple organs failure. His cremation ceremony took place at Smriti Sthal after innumerable politicians paid their last respect in BJP headquarter and at Smriti Sthal.
Among the dignitaries who paid last respect to the admirable leader include – President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, BJP President Amit Shah, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, Sri Lanka acting Foreign Minister Lakshman Kiriella and King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck .
Also, chief ministers of various states, politicians from BJP, RSS and opposition parties paid their last respect to the beloved leader. After the military honours, the mortals remains of former PM was handed over to granddaughter Niharika.
Sharing the condolences, France released a statement. They stated: “Poet, politician, visionary, he left his mark on India’s history. His name remains linked to the Indo-French friendship, which he shaped by launching the strategic partnership that has united our two countries since 1998.”
