Assam: Semi-clad student found dead in passenger train toilet
In a disheartening case of suspected rape before murder, a student of Assam Agriculture University was found murdered aboard a train at Simaluguri railway station in Assam‘s Sivasagar district today, police said.
The body of the 21-year-old girl, identified as Radha Kumari, with several injury marks was recovered from the toilet of the Kamakhya Express when the train had stopped at Simaluguri railway station, Assam. The girl lying in a pool of blood was semi-clad, leading to the suspicion that she was raped before her murder on the moving train, the police said.
Sivsagar Superintendent of Police Subodh Sonowal said the girl’s mother had made her board the train at Sivasagar station around 8.50 am while her body was found in the train’s toilet when the train reached Simaluguri station around 9.10 am.
Police sources said the girl was a student of B.Sc fifth semester of Assam Agricultural University. The girl was to visit her uncle in Golaghat and was slated to deboard the train at Furkating station.
“I gave her Rs. 10,000 to buy a mobile phone. Somebody killed my daughter for money and dumped her in the toilet,” the girl’s mother said.
Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen injury marks on her face as the girl was bleeding profusely from her nose while a piece of cloth was tied to her neck and her trousers were found lowered from the waist, News Live reported.
Lack of closed-circuit television systems (CCTVs) at the Sivasagar railway station like many other stations in Assam is a glitch on the part of the authorities that can’t be overlooked anymore. There is also a scarcity of security personnel in the railway stations and trains, Time 8 reported.
“It is difficult to say anything at this moment. An autopsy will confirm whether the girl was raped before her murder,” said a police officer.
