Assam was one of those states in the country that was trying its best to not get contracted the novel coronavirus. But it has finally fallen prey to the pathogen. A 52-year-old man in Assam tested coronavirus positive on March 31. He hails from Karimganj district and was suffering from high fever and other complications since the past few days. The man travelled to Delhi, visited Jama Masjid and Nizamuddin, the coronavirus hotspot but it is said that he did not attend the religious event at Nizamuddin.
Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his Twitter handle and wrote, “A 52-year-old person has been found positive for coronavirus and is Assam’s first Covid-19 patient. He is undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College. His condition is stable.”
Now, four more cases from Assam have tested positive for Covid-19 as confirmed by the health minister. The total tally in Assam reaches 5 now.
The population of Assam is 3.5 crores and the preparation to fight the virus is going on in full swing. The steps the government has taken so far are transforming two stadiums, including the Saru Sojai Stadium in Guwahati quarantine facilities with a total of 2,000 beds and ensuring that all 33 districts have designated treatment centres for coronavirus patients.
Also, three state-run medical colleges, with a total of 5,000 beds have been prepared to serve as COVID-19 treatment centres. Also, the nurses and final year medical students are prepared well to fight the coronavirus.
Today, Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed a press conference and also stated that the cases in the state “may cross double-digits by evening.”
