Asian Games 2018: One gold and two bronze medals for India in rowing
After facing disappointment in Kabaddi a day ago, Indian athletes returned back the smiles as the rowers claimed one gold and two bronze medals on the sixth day of the 18th Asian Games on Friday.
The Indian rowing team which comprises of Sawarn Singh, Dattu Bhokanal, Om Prakash and Sukhmeet Singh clinched the gold medal with a timing of 6:17:13 in the men’s quadruple sculls. This is India’s fifth gold medal in the ongoing competition. Hosts Indonesia clocked (6:20: 58) to win the silver medal while Thailand with a time of (6:22:41) had to settle for the bronze medal.
Bhokanal’s gold, secured in the team event, showed that he bounced back stronger to prove his worth, after failing to complete his event, thus angering the coach on Thursday.
Similarly, Sawarn and Prakash had missed out on winning the bronze medal in the men’s doubles sculls a day ago.
Before the gold medal, Indian rowers-through the team of Rohit Kumar and Bhagwan Singh in the lightweight double sculls and Dushyant in the lightweight singles sculls category won two bronze medals.
Rohit and Bhagwan recorded a time of 7:04:61 to secure a third-place finish with Japan’s Miyaura Masayuki and Takeda Masahiro winning the gold medal at 7:01:70. The Korean duo of Kim Byunghoon and Lee Minhyuk won a silver, clocking 7:03:22.
Earlier in the day, Dushyant Chauhan with a timing of 7:18:76 gave India its first medal in rowing at the ongoing Games when he won the bronze in the men’s lightweight single sculls.
The gold medal in this category was won by Hyunsu Park of Korea while Chun Gun Chiu bagged the silver medal.
