Six Amul directors boycotted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Anand event
Six directors of Amul (Anand Milk United Limited)— a dairy giant, including its vice-chairman Rajendrasinh Parmar had reportedly boycotted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event at Mogar in Anand district on Sunday, where Modi inaugurated a chocolate plant and several other projects.
While inaugurating a chocolate-making factory set-up by Amul in Gujarat, Modi on Sunday said a cooperative like Amul is a viable economic alternative to capitalist and socialist models. He also lauded Amul saying, “It fills me with pride that it is the result of a farmers’ cooperative movement of over seven decades that Amul has become an identity, inspiration and necessity in the country,” The Hindu reported.
Amul director Rajendrasinh Parmar said, “He would not attend the event along with his five other directors, including Dhirubhai Chavda, Juvansinh Chauhan, Rajusinh Parmar, Neetaben Solanki, Chandubhai Parmar.”
He added, “I told the chairman and managing director that I don’t have any objection to the PM’s visit. But, it should not be a political function. At the function, they ended up patting their own backs. Amul did not gain anything from the event,” said Rajendrasinh, quoted by Indian Express as saying.
Rajendrasinh had, on Saturday, claimed Amul event being hijacked by the BJP. He said that the party had put up posters of its local leaders and flags all over the venue.
He further said, “I have been the vice chairman of the Dairy giant Amul for the last 12 years. My father was also the vice chairman. PM Modi was not the first political leader who visited Amul, there are several other ministers who have come to Amul, but the political event was never organised.”
When asked reasons for a boycott of the Amul event, Rajendrasinh alleged that an estimated Rs 10 to 15 crore of farmer’s money was spend by the dairy giant on the function. Where more than lakh farmers from different areas of Anand, Kheda and Vadodara were in attendance.
