Assam NRC issue: Amit Shah to rally in Mamata Banerjee’s turf on August 11

A day after accusing the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to disturb the peace of the country, Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah announced that he will rally in TMC supremo’s turf on August 11. The announcement comes as a surprise, as its only a month that Shah visited the state and interacted with party leaders.

Shah had visited the state of West Bengal in June end and addressed his ‘Lok Sabha Toli’. In that visit he interacted with the senior party leaders and took a stock of the preparations for the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections. But, the sudden announcement of this visit is a clear indication that BJP is not going to give TMC an opportunity to overshadow it politically.

On Tuesday, questioning Mamata Banerjee’s intention on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft, Shah had said, “She (Mamata) is saying there will be a war in the country. On what basis is she saying this? she must come clear on this. Do people of this country have rights or not? Can a country run like this?”

He was reacting to the comments made by Banerjee, in which she said, “They’re trying to divide people, there will be bloodbath and civil war in the country.” The TMC chief had alleged that BJP is trying to polarise the issue for political gain. She said, “More than 40 lakhs people voted yesterday for the ruling party and suddenly today they have been made refugees in their own country.”

Soon after her comments Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha – BJP’s youth wing – filed a complaint against the TMC leader. They accused her trying to create a situation of unrest in the country. According to the NRC draft, released on Monday, 40.07 lakh people will have to prove their nationality within a month or proper action might be taken. However, Supreme Court stated that Assam Citizens’ list is just a draft and there should be no action on those who have been left out.
