Aligarh Muslim University issues strange advisory to educate students

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has instructed the residents of the Sir Shah Sulaiman Hall men’s hostel to not step out of their rooms in slippers and shorts and to wear black Sherwani or Kurta-Pyjama during festivals or University functions reported NDTV on Tuesday.

“Step out of the hostel in proper dress. No going out of the hall premises in kurta and pajama wearing slippers. The same rules apply to the dining room, common room and reading room. Bermudas, shorts, and slippers are strictly forbidden. Black sherwani or kurta pajama should be worn on all important occasions and university functions,” the news website was quoted saying from an advisory released at the AMU campus.

The University reportedly has mentioned that since the newcomers engage in activities which are “anathema” to the lifestyle inside the campus, they have issued an advisory on the “basic traditions” of AMU.

“While any ignorance in this regard is very painful for the seniors as well as for the hall administration, it is also undesirable for the freshers as they lose out on a chance to imbibe some good habits,” hostel Provost Sadaf Zaidi wrote in the advisory.

Knock on the door and wait for the answer before entering someone’s room. Share food from home with the other hostel mates, read the advisory.

The advisory has also advised the resident of the hostel to not call the dining hall attendants by their name but call them as “miyaa” or “bhai”. Address the fellow hostel mates as “partner”, senior to pay the bill, if a junior accompanied him to the canteen. It also suggests that everyone who comes to visit them inside the hostel should be offered tea.

One of the oldest residential hostels of the Aligarh Muslim University, the Sir Shah Sulaiman Hall accommodates around 650 undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as research scholars of the Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology.
