Singapore’s Foreign Minister Urges Arvind Kejriwal to ‘stick to facts’ on ‘Singapore variant’ tweet

On Tuesday i.e May 18, many international media outlets reported that Singapore has warned its citizen of a new Coronavirus variant that appears to be targeting younger children. Its Education Ministry has also been reportedly ordered to shut the physical classes for primary, secondary school and Jr. college students. Also learning from home facilities would be deployed soon it’s being stated. Reacting to this Arvind Kejriwal shared a tweet post and urged the Indian government to deploy resources to produce vaccines for children before the third wave hits the country. On Wednesday, Singapore’s Foreign Minister- Vivian Balakrishnan reacted to Kejriwal’s tweet and asked him to ‘stick to facts’.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Hindi tweet post read, “The new form of Corona that came to Singapore is being said to be extremely dangerous for children, in India it may come as a third wave. My appeal to the central government: 1. Air services with Singapore to be canceled with immediate effect. 2. Priority on vaccine options should be worked out for children too.” 

Reacting to the Delhi CM’s tweet post, Singapore in India stated, “There is no truth in the assertion that there is a new COVID strain in Singapore. Phylogenetic testing has shown that the B.1.617.2 variant is the prevalent strain in many of the COVID cases, including in children, in recent weeks in Singapore.” On the other side, Singapore’s Foreign Minister- Vivian Balakrishnan urged Kejriwal that, “Politicians should stick to facts! There is no “Singapore variant.”

Kejriwal’s tweet post also caught the attention of renowned people from India. The External Affairs Minister of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar reacted to Arvind Kejriwal’s tweet and stated in a cryptic note, “Singapore and India have been solid partners in the fight against Covid-19. Appreciate Singapore’s role as a logistics hub and oxygen supplier. Their gesture of deploying military aircraft to help us speaks of our exceptional relationship. However, irresponsible comments from those who should know better can damage long-standing partnerships. So, let me clarify- Delhi CM does not speak for India.”

Singapore and India have been solid partners in the fight against Covid-19.
