India vs Australia: Rishabh Pant Breaks MS Dhoni’s Record at Gabba

Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant on Tuesday became the 7th Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to reach the 1000 test runs mark. Pant reached the landmark during the final day of the fourth Test against Australia. He has broken MS Dhoni’s record to become the fastest Indian wicketkeeper to register 1000 Test runs during the ongoing final Test vs Australia at the Gabba.

Rishabh Pant surpassed Mahendra Singh Dhoni and touched the milestone in only 27 innings. Whereas Dhoni had taken 32 innings to reach mark. Since Dhoni’s retirement, Pant has been touted as the next Indian wicket-keeper to take the charge.

Pant needed 24 runs ahead of the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar series at the Gabba to get to the mark. He did it quite easily when he pulled a short ball from Pat Cummins to the deep backward square leg for a couple.

The other Indian wicketkeepers who have 1000-plus Test runs under their belt are Farokh Engineer (36 innings), Wriddhiman Saha (37 innings), Nayan Mongia (39 innings), Syed Kirmani (45 innings) and Kiran More (50 innings).

With the series level at 1-1, holders India now need only a draw in Brisbane to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. It is two years after their breakthrough 2-1 win in the 2018/19 series Down Under.
