Cyclone Nivar: Chennai lashed with rains, Section 144 imposed in Puducherry

Tamil Nadu is bracing for another cyclonic storm after super cyclone Amphan that hit the state in May this year. The storm is likely to make landfall between Karaikal and Mamallapuram on Wednesday evening. The next three days shall see extremely heavy rain, strong winds along with highly rough sea conditions in the Southern State.

District Magistrate, Purva Garg, Puducherry said the region is expected to be severely impacted by the cyclone. He added that there is a grave danger to life, health or safety of the public.

The District Magistrate has imposed Section 144 from 9 pm tonight till 6 am, 26th Nov in entire Puducherry region. All shops & establishments will remain closed. Only milk stations, petrol stations & pharmacies are allowed to operate.

“Cyclone Nivar is expected to hit Tamil Nadu coast on Wednesday afternoon. The projected track indicates its landwards crossing between Karaikal and Mamallapuram near Puducherry as a severe cyclonic storm (100 to 110 km/ hr gusting to 120 km/hr),” said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general, IMD.

The weatherman has predicted widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from November 24-26 and over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Telangana till Thursday.

Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea. Coastal hutment dwellers are being moved to safer places. People in affected areas has been advised to remain indoors.
