Sumit Nagal Creates History At US Open, First Indian To Win Grand Slam Round In Seven Years
Sumi Nagal 1st Indian in 7 Years to Win a Grand Slam Main Draw Match; Takes India To Second Round Of Grand Slam Singles
Sumit Nagal became the first Indian to win a round at a Grand Slam in seven years. He achieved this feat by defeating the United States’ Bradley Klahn 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to play further into the tournament. The 23-year-old tennis player has become the first Indian to win a singles main draw match at a Grand Slam in the last seven years. The last Indian was Somdev Devvarman at 2013 US Open.

Nagal is the only Indian in the singles main draw in New York. He has recently joined Novak Djokovic’s new Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) along with compatriot Rohan Bopanna.

Nagal was in his best form in the initial two sets of the match against Klahn. In the third Klahn returned to vanquish Nagal. But the youngster once again rose to the top in the fourth set. The Indian tennis star soon wrapped up the match.
Nagal, who is the world number 122 will next confront either Austria’s Dominic Thiem or Spain’s Jaume Munar in the second round of the US Open.
