George Floyd Funeral: He’ll change the world, family pays emotional tribute

A three-state, five-day final journey for George Floyd ended Tuesday in Houston. Family members and friends said a final goodbye to George Floyd at his funeral service in his hometown of Houston. Floyd grew up in the city’s Third Ward, where he was loved by friends and family alike. The 6-foot, 6-inch man was often referred to as a “gentle giant.”

Thousands of mourners, including longtime friends and family members, gathered for the final funeral services at The Fountain of Praise church. Many wore blackface coverings and sat apart in the pews as pallbearers brought Floyd’s gold-colored casket up the aisle. Family members broke down as they approached the casket and paid their respects one last time.

Floyd’s body was escorted by the Houston Police Department into Houston Memorial Gardens in Pearland. A white horse-drawn carriage carried his casket for about a mile to his final resting place. Floyd was to be buried beside his mother.

Rev. Al Sharpton said at his funeral, “George Floyd was an “ordinary brother” from Houston’s housing projects who “nobody thought much about,” which makes his central role in a generational movement that much more powerful. God took the rejected stone and made him the cornerstone of a movement that’s going to change the whole wide world. Your family is going to miss you George, but your nation is going to always remember your name. Because your neck was one that represents all of us, and how you suffered is how we all suffer.”

The service featured remarks by former Vice President Joe Biden, Rep. Al Green of Texas, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. Family members of other black people killed by police, including Breonna Taylor, Michael Brown and Eric Garner, attended as well.

George Floyd died in Minneapolis last month as a white police officer held a knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes. Four police officers involved have been sacked and charged over his death.
