When Selena Gomez wore bindi at MTV Movie Awards and stirred controversy
Back in 2013 at the MTV Movie Awards, American singer Selena Gomez created controversy as she wore a bindi while performing 'Come & Get It.'
American singer Selena Gomez sparked controversy when she wore a Bindi at the MTV Movie Awards while performing ‘Come & Get It’ which didn’t go down well with many Hindu groups at the time.
Here’s the video of Selena Gomez’s performance:
Rajan Zed, leader of the Universal Society of Hinduism, said in a statement to WENN, “The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol,” explained Zed.
Further adding, “It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions.”
Post-controversy, Selena told Us Weekly that she finds Hindu culture exciting and enjoyed learning about her “seven chakras.” However, once again the singer wore the Hindu symbol on her forehead during her “Come and Get It” performance on her performance for Ellen and “Dancing with the Stars.”
Well, Selena Gomez is not the first Hollywood celebrity to try Hindu culture on for size. Julia Roberts, Katy Perry, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Miley Cyrus, and Jessica Simpson have all been captured over the years sporting bindis.
