Cyclone Bulbul: Seven dead, one lakh houses damaged in West Bengal

Cyclone Bulbul made landfall on Saturday between Sagar Island of West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh. It then, moved northwestwards into the neighboring country over the Sunderban delta. The cyclone killed seven and destroyed more than one lakh houses in West Bengal. The death toll from Cyclone Bulbul rose to 12 in Bangladesh and five fishermen are still missing.

In Odisha, there have been no reports of casualties but extensive damage to standing crops in over two lakh hectares has been reported.

After killing twelve people in the eastern states of West Bengal and Odisha, cyclone Bulbul has now weakened into a depression. The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall in parts of West Bengal and northeastern states.

In West Bengal, five people were killed in Basirhat, while South 24 Parganas recorded two deaths and another in East Midnapore. Bulbul has affected 4.65 lakh people. Two hundred people have taken shelter at Sagar Pilot Station of Kolkata Port Trust after the cyclonic storm affected several areas of West Bengal.

In most parts of coastal Odisha, heavy rain and high-velocity winds triggered by cyclone ‘Bulbul’ wreaked havoc. Around 350 people from Baincha village have taken shelter in the Balasore district in Odisha.
