Two-year-old falls into 26 feet-deep borewell in Trichy, rescue operations on

A two-year-boy Sujith Wilson is battling for his life after falling down an abandoned borewell in Tamil Nadu‘s Trichy district. The boy named Sujith Wilson fell into the borewell at around 5.30 pm on Friday night while playing nearby. He is the second son of Britto Arockiaraj, a mason, and Kalarani. Police and fire rescue teams are working to rescue him since yesterday.

Although oxygen is being supplied, there is no food and water and health officials are concerned about the boy’s condition.

A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) too has reached Nadukattupatti, where the incident occurred. But now Sujith, who was trapped initially at a depth of about 30 feet, slipped further inside and is now believed to be wedged at a depth of 70 feet in the borewell.

Health Minister Dr Vijaya Baskar, who has camped at the site revealed to The Hindu that, “The young boy, had initially been trapped at a depth of around 26 feet and was responding to calls from the surface. However, he later slipped further down the borewell. Initially, one of his hands was knotted to a rope sent through a pipe and he remained at a depth of 26 feet. Attempts to knot the other hand too and pull him up resulted in him slipping at the last moment.”

He further added that “Till 5.30 am we were able to hear the sounds of the child, but after that, we have not been able to hear anything. We are not able to assess his condition. The supply of oxygen through oxygen cylinders has been continuously given.”

A team had attempted to rescue the boy by excavating nearby areas with the help of earthmovers. But as they hit a layer of rocks the excavation was called off.

It is really shocking that despite several such tragedies in the past the government is not taking any action on the matter. Also, there is still no safe and sure method to rescue the children who fall into these death traps.
