Debutant Shadman Islam and captain Shakib Al Hasan scored the fifties to help Bangladesh reach a decent position at the end of the first day’s play in the second Test in Dhaka on Friday.

The debutant opener stroked his way to 76 while his skipper Shakib made 55 as Bangladesh ended the first day at 259/5.
For the visitors, leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo was the star performer with figures of 2/69. Shadman’s 199-ball stay at the crease perfectly summed up Bangladesh’s efforts on the day. Mahmadullah and Shakib stitched an undefeated stand of 69 runs for the sixth wicket to see off the day.
But the star for the day was Shadman, who shared three useful stands of 42, 45 and 64 runs with Soumya Sarkar, Mominul Haque and Mohammad Mithun respectively. The first one in the Bangladesh batting line-up to perish was Soumya Sarkar when he fell for a score of 19 runs. Mominul and Mithun were the next two victims for the Windies who were slowly plotting their comeback in the match.
But Shadman’s knock kept them on their toes as he swept spinner Jomel Warrican for a four through the square leg region to get to his fifty.
But his stay at the crease was cut short by Bishoo after lunch.
