Delhi: 18-year-old sprinter allegedly commits suicide inside JLN Stadium
18-year-old sprinter, Palender Chaudhary has allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday evening. Chaudhary was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside his hostel room in athletics academy at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, reported ANI.
The reason for sprinter’s suicide yet to be ascertained. According to media reports, Chaudhary had returned to his room at 5:30 PM after completing the morning training session.
An official of Sports Authority of India (SAI) told news agency ANI, Palender had an argument with his father over some subject on Monday. “I was told he had an argument on phone with his father in the morning yesterday. Later his sister came to talk to him too. Unfortunately, we could not save him despite our best efforts,” the official told.
Palender was rushed to the medical Centre of JNS by his coach and other guards. After the initial treatment, he was referred to SJ Hospital for further treatment. On Wednesday morning, Doctor declared him dead.
Notably, Palender had represented India in 100 and 200 mt. race on the international circuit and also represented India in Youth Asia Athletic meet Bankok in 2017.
“He told me he needed money. I assured him that I will give him the money. Don’t know what happened later. I’ve no complaints against the people at the stadium,” his father told ANI.
