Asian Para Games: Deepa Malik bags bronze in women’s discus throw event

Deepa Malik clinched her second medal at the Asian Para Games on Friday with her bronze in the women’s F51/52/53s discus throw event.
Malik’s best effort came in her fourth attempt wherein she pulled off a 9.67-metre throw to bag the bronze medal. Iran’s Elnaz Darabian won the gold while setting a new Asian record of 10.71m while Bahrain’s Fatema Nedham settled for the silver with a throw of 9.87 m.
Ekta Bhyan, who had earlier won a gold medal in the women’s club throw event pulled of an effort of 6.52m which saw her end at the last place in a four-woman field.

Athletes in the F51/52/53 category basically compete from seated positions as they have full power and movements in their arms but none in their abdominal muscles.

Earlier, Malik had secured a bronze medal in the F53/54 javelin throw event and that Rio Paralympics medallist attributed this success to none other than her father.

“I am happy. It’s special for me. I dedicate this to my father’s memory. Both my medals are special. Proud that I won this for my nation. I am thankful to Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Paralympic Committee of India,” Malik said, as quoted by ANI.

In a tweet, she also said that her second bronze in the competition is much more special given the fact that she has just learned to hold a discus.
