Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan — contesting for the fourth time in the upcoming Assembly elections — promised on Sunday that if he retains the power, his government will dedicate a cow welfare ministry in the state. The state will become the second in the country, after Rajasthan, to ensure that cattle are treated well.

Addressing a gathering in Khajuraho, Chouhan said, “I have reason to believe that the Cow Protection Board in the state should be turned into a full-fledged ministry.” Earlier, even Akhileshwaranand Giri, Cow Protection Board chairman, had recommended a ministry dedicated for the same cause.

This is not the first time that Chouhan has spoken about the protection of cows in the state. On several occasions, he stressed on the need to save the bovines for the future generations, but this is for the first time he promised a cow welfare ministry in the state.

Not only Chouhan, even Congress leader and in-charge for Madhya Pradesh, but Kamal Nath had also promised cow shelters in the state if the party wins Assembly elections. Last month, while addressing a gathering, he had said, “Look at the condition of the cows here. They always keep talking about cattle but do nothing for them. If we are voted to power, we will construct gaushalas in every panchayat.”
