Asian Games 2018: Hima Das, Muhammed Anas claim silver in 400m; Dutee Chand in 100m

Hima Das continued her surge in the athletics field winning a silver at the 400m women’s event of the 18^th Asian Games on Sunday. She was well complemented with Muhammed Anas, who bagged a silver in the men’s 400m event.

The 18-year-old from Assam clocked 50.59 seconds to finish behind Salwa Naser of Bahrain, who clinched the gold with a 50.09 seconds timing, in the process creating new Asian record in the process.

It was Hima’s second national record in as many days after she had clocked 51.00 seconds on Saturday in the qualifiers to better the 14-year-old record set by Manjeet Kaur (51.05s) in Chennai, 2004. She also became the first Indian female athlete to win a medal at the 400m event, since Kaur had won it at the 2006 Games in Doha.

Another Indian in the fray, Nirmala Sheoran finished fourth with a 52.96 timing.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 400m final event Anas clocked 45.69 seconds to finish behind Qatar’s Hassan Abdalelah, who topped the podium with a 44.89 seconds timing.

Dutee Chand clinched the silver in the women’s 100m dash missing on the gold by just 0.02 seconds. She clocked 11.32 seconds to finish behind Edidiong Ofonime Odiong of Bahrain, who claimed the gold.

She finished seventh in the qualifying round with 11.43 seconds on the clock but sprinted for life in the final to win the country’s first medal in 20 years at the Asian Games. Last India to win a medal at the event was Rachita Mistry (bronze) in the 1998 Asian Games.

The 22-year-old from Odisha was earlier suspended from taking part any intercontinental event since 2014 under the IAAF’s hyperandrogenism policy but was later allowed to participate following an appeal at the court of arbitration for sports.

Odiong clocked 11.30, while Wei Yongli of China settled for the bronze with an 11.33 seconds finish.
