Motihari Police on Friday has arrested 12 people on charges of beating up an assistant professor of Mahatma Gandhi Central University, shortly after he shared a Facebook post that criticised former Prime Minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee, who passed away recently.

According to Indian Express, Sanjay Kumar, assistant professor with the university’s sociology department, has suffered internal injuries and is fainting at regular intervals. He is being treated at Patna Medical College and Hospital.

Kumar has said in his complaint filed at Town police station that he was in his room at Azad Nagar in Motihari when 20-25 people led by Rahul Pandey and Aman Bihari Vajpayee attacked him and tried to lynch him. He has also alleged that during the assault, the accused asked him why he had been speaking up against the Motihari university V-C and a few others. A purported video of the incident shows a person asking Kumar if he wanted to “become Kanhaiya Kumar”. He has also alleged that the accused tried to douse him with petrol.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) member Sayed Mateen was arrested on Saturday in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad for opposing a condolence resolution on former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation general body meeting. The meeting on Friday witnessed a ruckus when a dozen-odd Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporators assaulted Mateen for refusing to pay tribute to Vajpayee.

The AIMIM said the opposition to the resolution was not the stand of the party but demanded action against the corporators involved in the assault.

Shortly after the house convened, BJP corporators led by Rahul Vaidya moved a condolence resolution on Vajpayee`s death, which was opposed by AIMIM’s Sayed Mateen.

Livid at this, 10-12 BJP corporators, including some women members, pulled Mateen from his seat, slapped, punched and even one of them kicked him repeatedly, even when he fell on the floor, shows a video by news agency ANI.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away after prolonged illness on August 16.
