Exhausted after a long nine and a half hour journey from New Delhi to the Asian Games Athletes’ village in Jakarta, the Indian athletes decided to skip the Independence Day celebration at the Indian embassy in Indonesia on Wednesday.

The Independence Day celebration which took place in the Indian embassy early on Wednesday morning had only the men’s and women’s handball teams, chef de mission Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and his two assistants Raj Kumar Sacheti and Dev Kumar Singh in attendance, with the other athletes preferring to stay and rest at the Athletes’ Village, reported the Hindustan Times. About 200 school children, who were of Indian origin were also part of the celebration.

“It was a big celebration and we enjoyed with the same enthusiasm and passion as we would have in India,” men’s assistant coach Bhuwan Bhatt was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times. “Ahead of the Games, the celebration is a big boost to Indian athletes. If we manage to win more medals than what we had in the last edition, it would be a real tribute to our country and the spirit of independence.

Many of those athletes who could not attend the celebration ceremony including the men’s and women’s hockey team and the wrestling teams landed late on Tuesday night and therefore couldn’t be ready for the ceremony at the Indian embassy.

“We certainly wanted to go there, but couldn’t make it to the ceremony as we were tired and needed rest. For sure, we will be celebrating Independence Day in our own style but only after the team’s training,” a hockey team official said.


Most of them, however, overcame their disappointment by wishing their fans on social media sites. Table-Tennis sensation Manika Batra put up a video with the entire team, while Men’s hockey team captain PR Sreejesh followed suit with a similar video.


Shooting star and favorite to win the gold medal at the Asian Games, Heena Sidhu also posted a picture on Twitter along with an Independence Day wish.
