Remembering Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore on his 77th death anniversary today. The Nobel laureate, who has shaped the modern philosophy and literature of India, was born in the illustrious Tagore family (who were also at the forefront of Bengal renaissance). Tagore was born on 7th May 1861. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 and became the first non-European to win it. Till date he is the only Nobel prize winner in literature from India. In 2004, the prize was stolen from the safety vault of Visva-Bharati University. His work has inspired millions all over the world and will continue to do so. Let’s dive in for some interesting fact about the genius.

Tagore started Visva-Bharati University in 1921 at Shantiniketan in Bengal’s Birbhum district. It was declared a central university in May 1951

Tagore conferred the title of Mahatma on Gandhi, Gandhiji paying tribute to Tagore gave him the title ‘Gurudev’.

“Tagore admired Mahatma Gandhi immensely and expressed his admiration for his leadership time and again, but sharply differed with him when Gandhi was departing from adequate reasoning,” economist and another Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen once said.
