Top party leaders met in New Delhi on Saturday for the Congress Working Committee meet to discuss the current political situation and chalk out a strategy on key issues of the Rafale deal and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
“The CWC met today. As a team, we discussed the political situation in the country and the huge opportunity for the Congress to highlight issues of corruption and failure of the government to provide jobs to our youth. Thank you to all those who attended today’s meeting, ” Rahul Gandhi tweeted after the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Congress president Rahul Gandhi, while former party chief and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi could not attend it, party sources said. This is the second meeting of the newly-constituted CWC, the party’s highest decision-making body, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.
Randeep Surjewala addressed the media by saying, ” The Assam Accord was passed by late Shri Rajiv Gandhi when he was the Prime Minister in 1985. The NRC (National Register of Citizens) was formed based on the accord. The Accord was passed keeping the modalities of the law in place. However, BJP is trying to break the moral and secular fabric of the country by misusing the NRC laws. The Congress government under the leadership of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2009 had allotted Rs 460 crores to Assam NRC process. We admit that the Supreme Court has been monitoring the NRC and the Assam Accord since 2014, however 40 lakh people are left out of the process. The CWC and the Congress party believes that people should be able to prove their citizenship with all legal and constitutional aid.”
