West Indies march towards a respectable total after early hiccups
A difficult Day 1 for hosts West Indies against Sri Lanka. The visitors put them under a spot of bother in the early stages but later on they couldn’t capitalize and West Indies got to a respectable total at the end of days play.
The openers got dismissed quite early which was an early setback for the home team. Kraigg Braithwaite managed just 3 runs whereas the 36 year old Devon Smith had a horrendous comeback. He succumbed to a run out which is nothing short of a sin when it comes to Test cricket.
Sri Lanka put on a commendable bowling display and reduced West Indies to 147 for 5. Jason Holder and Wicket keeper batsman Shane Dowrich came to the rescue and took West Indies to a respectable total. They had a 90 run stand between the two before Holder was caught behind on the bowling of Lahiru Kumara.
It could have been worse for West Indies as the visitors spilled easy chances of both the batters. Angelo Mathews dropped Shane Dowrich on 16 whereas Roshen Silva dropped Holder on just 2 runs. Devendra Bishoo did his part by not scoring a single run in 32 balls but holding one end firmly without giving away his wicket.
West Indies will begin Day 2 with the score of 246-6.
