A powerful earthquake of 7.4 magnitudes centered near the resort of Huatulco in southern Mexico swayed buildings in Mexico City. The tremors sent thousands into the streets and triggered a tsunami warning. Power too was knocked out to some areas.  Mexico’s civil protection agency said the death toll from the earthquake was four.

The US Geologic Survey said the magnitude 7.4 quake hit at 10:29 a.m. along Mexico’s southern Pacific coast. It was at a depth of 16 miles (26 km). The epicenter was 7 miles (12 km) south-southwest of Santa Maria Zapotitlan in Oaxaca state. The tremors were felt in Guatemala and throughout south and central Mexico. There were more than 447 aftershocks that had been reported.

Mexico’s seismological service said a tsunami on the Oaxaca coast was ongoing. The sea levels were rising 2 feet at Huatulco beach. The civil protection agency recommended that residents move away from the coastline.

The USGS estimated that some 2 million people felt strong or moderate shaking. They added that another 49 million felt weak or light shaking.
