“Flash floods triggered mudslides followed by heavy rains in the last 48 hours,” State officials said on Monday.
Parts of the state capital Agartala and outskirts of West Tripura, Khowai, Gomati and Sepahijala districts were submerged while Haora and Gomati rivers were flowing above the danger mark.
If reports are to be believed, thousands have been rendered homeless and were living in 71 relief camps set up by the officials in the northeastern states who described the pre-monsoon rains as unusual.
Heavy rainfall has been predicted by the weather department in the coming days.
Tripura State Chief Minister Biplab Deb paid a visit to his assembly constituency Banamalipur reviewed the area and announced a compensation of 5 Lakh to each of the families of the dead 1 Lakh for the reconstruction of the damaged houses.
He said, “The government will extend all possible assistance to the flood victims at the earliest”.
