6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Assam, tremors felt across Bengal

On Wednesday morning, an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 hit Assam, said the National Centre for Seismology, and strong tremors were felt in parts of the northeast as well as north Bengal. Two aftershocks were also recorded within minutes of the first quake and the epicenter for it was 43 km west of Tezpur, Assam and the depth was 17 km. The three aftershocks measured 4.0, 3.6, and 3.6 on the Richter Scale respectively.

“Earthquake of Magnitude:6.4, Occurred on 28-04-2021, 07:51:25 IST, Lat: 26.69 & Long: 92.36, Depth: 17 Km ,Location: 43km W of Tezpur, Assam, India,” tweeted National Center For Seismology.

Several houses and buildings were damaged in Assam. No injury or casualty was reported, but the quake caused damage to the wall and false ceiling areas in Guwahati’s luxury hotel- Taj Vivanta.

Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister of Assam tweeted about the earthquake and wrote: “Big earthquake hits Assam. I pray for the well being of all and urge everyone to stay alert. Taking updates from all districts. #earthquake”

Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Of India also took to his Twitter and said that he spoke to Assam’s CM regarding the earthquake. “Spoke to Assam CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal Ji regarding the earthquake in parts of the state. Assured all possible help from the Centre. I pray for the well-being of the people of Assam,” he tweeted.

Assam’s health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared pictures of the damage caused by the quake and wrote. “Few early pictures of damage in Guwahati.
