An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck near Melbourne in Australia on Wednesday. Geoscience Australia said that it is one of the country’s biggest quakes on record. The earthquake caused damage to buildings in the country’s second-largest city and also sent tremors throughout the neighbouring states.
The epicentre of the quake was near the rural town of Mansfield. It lies in the state of Victoria, about 200 km (124 miles) northeast of Melbourne. The depth of the earthquake was at 10 km (six miles). Soon after the earthquake, a 4.0n aftershock rattled the area.
Social media was filled with video and pictures of the aftermath. The images and video footage circulating on social media showed rubble blocking one of Melbourne’s main streets. Many were evacuated from buildings.
There are no reports of damage outside Melbourne or reports of injuries.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison, said there were no initial reports of injuries. He added that this is a very rare event in Australia.
No tsunami threat was issued to the Australian mainland, islands or territories, the country’s Bureau of Meteorology said in a statement.
