290 Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrims from Karnataka get stuck in Nepal
Around 290 Kailash Manasarovar pilgrims from Karnataka were supposedly stranded in the Himalayas due to heavy rainfall in the region. The Karnataka government has reached out the Indian Mission in Nepal for assistance and have also requested Union Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajnath Singh to look at this matter immediately.
Acting on a SOS message, Karnataka’s Revenue Department (Disaster Management) tweeted the message and asked the Indian Mission in Kathmandu for assistance on Monday. It tweeted, “Around 290 Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrims from Karnataka stranded in Simikot, Nepal due to heavy rain in the Himalayan region.”

The Karnataka government also issued the emergency number for contacting those stranded pilgrims. Accordingly, pilgrims and their families can contact Pranav Ganesh, first secretary, Embassy of India Kathmandu at +977 985-1107006. The situation emerged due to the bad weather conditions on the Himalayas, which previously too forced the pilgrims and hundreds of them to be evacuated in 2016.
Stepping fast, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has directed authorities to initiate quick action to save the pilgrims and informed state’s resident commissioner in Delhi to step in, says a statement from the chief minister’s office. The statement added that Indian Embassy had assured full assistance.

The CMO said, “The Embassy of India, Kathmandu is continuously monitoring the situation in Simikot. Embassy representatives in Nepalganj and Simikot are personally in touch with all stranded pilgrims and are extending all possible support to them for stay, and ensuring availability of food/water.”
Though the evacuation is not feasible as of now due to inclement weather, the authorities are also looking into the possibility of heli-evacuation for critical cases, the CMO added.
