In a shocking new revelation by the UGC, 277 fake engineering institutes have been found running in the country. Delhi tops the list with 66 fake institutes running in the national capital. In a report filed by Union Minister Satyapal Singh, West Bengal and Telangana are closely behind with 35 and 27 institutes operating in the states. The list also includes states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Tamil Nadu. Over the past few years a lot of fake institutes have mushroomed in the country causing a concern for the educational ministry.

He further added that there would be a crackdown on such institutes and have been asked to approach AICTE to avoid facing the axe. The University Grants Commission (UGC) is monitoring the issue. It has also sent instructions take steps against such institutes, the minister further added. The UGC has also maintained a list of 24 fake universities on its official website ugc.ac.in. In April, the UGC had tracked down plenty more bogus universities which were offering an array of courses and degrees.
“Students and public at large are informed that at present following 24 self-styled and unrecognised institutions are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act in various parts of the country. These universities have been declared as fake and are not entitled to confer any degrees,” the notice added” a notice issued by the UGC had said.
